When I was a little girl, my favorite thing to do was to go to the movies; however, it was an excursion my mother would soon learn to dread.  Most of the films I saw were the glut of Disney films from the 1970s and you would think that there wasn’t any room for analysis, but even as a 7 year old, I had a burning question every time I watched a film.  Actually, several burning questions.   Why did characters act the way they did?  Why did certain scenes take place in certain ways?  Why did the film start the way it did?  Why did it end the way it did?  Why?  Why?  Why?  I’d be watching a film and whisper to my mother, “But WHY did he do that?  WHY?” My mother would get so exasperated with me, she would turn to me by the end of the first act of any film and say, “Romi, would just calm down and be quiet.  If you watch the entire film, you will understand why.”  It would drive me crazy as I watched the films, trying to understand the characters and their actions, their motivations, their weaknesses and their passions.  And yes, perhaps, it was just films like Superdad or Escape to Witch Mountain, The Apple Dumpling Gang or even Freaky Friday, but I was obsessed.  Fortunately for me, that obsession has only grown, and, I discovered in graduate school, it can be transferred to Television as well.

I have a B.A. in Film Studies from UCSB, an M.A. in Critical Studies (Film, Television and New Media) from UCLA and I’m a doctoral candidate at UCLA in Film, Television and Media Studies.  I’ve taught Film, Television, Communications and English Composition in Los Angeles at Cal State Los Angeles, UCLA and LA City College.
